Somatic Experiencing
"The body remembers what the mind forgets; it is through somatic experiencing that we can access and release stored traumatic memories." - Peter Levine
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a therapeutic approach designed to help individuals process and heal from trauma by focusing on the body's sensations and responses. Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, SE is based on the understanding that trauma can become "stuck" in the body, leading to physical and emotional symptoms such as chronic stress, anxiety, and pain.
The core principle of Somatic Experiencing is that the body holds onto traumatic experiences, and these experiences can manifest as physical sensations or tension. SE aims to help individuals become more aware of their bodily sensations and use this awareness to release stored trauma. During SE sessions, Derrick guides clients in exploring these sensations in a safe and controlled environment, helping them to gradually release the trauma energy held in their bodies.
The process involves titration, where clients are encouraged to work with small amounts of distressing sensations, and pendulation, which involves moving between states of discomfort and comfort. This helps to prevent re-traumatization and promotes the gradual resolution of traumatic responses.
Somatic Experiencing can be particularly effective for those who have experienced physical or emotional trauma, including those with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). By focusing on the body's natural ability to heal, SE helps individuals restore a sense of safety, resilience, and well-being.
Derrick continues to grow the depth and skills of his SE practice by working with Masters in the field- through ongoing consultation and continuing education.
